Chess - Game of Dreams

Chess is a board game played by two players as opponents. The chess board has 64 squares arranged in an 8 by 8 grid. Each side represented by white and black sets which contain a queen, a king, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns. In this game, the opponent is checkmated or stalemated or it ends in a draw.

The history of this game relates to the 7th-century Indian game Chaturanga. This isn’t merely a matter of amusement but the game provides several valuable qualities to the mind. It is said that life per se is a game of chess, where one gains or losses. From this game we learn foresight i.e. looking into the future, how to circumspect i.e. giving a 360-degree view of the circumstance. Also, we learn Caution i.e. not to make any hasty move.

SHORT STORY

Once there lived a young boy who spent his time watching his father play the game of chess. The father of the boy used to play chess competitions in the small town where they lived. As a keen observer of the game, the boy observed each move his father played. However, to the boy’s dismay, his father used to lose the game all the time. The father of the boy was always fast in his chess moves and would not wait to think which leads to him losing the game. Anxiously he once asked his father the reason for losing the game always. The father replied that he was unable to predict the next move of the opponent which leads to his loss.

The boy suggested to think from the opponent’s point of view and not to make any hasty move. This advice helped his father win the first game and win further games too. Over time, the father started to understand the strategy of winning and taught his son all tricks which were used to tackle opponents. The father also encouraged the boy to play chess which the boy did with interest and after that, they started playing every day. This made the boy start liking the game and during his schooling made him play many competitions. By understanding the tactics and by properly observing the opponents move the boy started winning competitions at various levels which made his father proud. The boy along with his father never left the practice of playing a game of chess daily. The constant practice and determination led the boy to succeed to become a grandmaster one fine day. This made his father amazed and overwhelmed with joy.

Thus from the story of the father and the son, one can understand that persistence and patience with a proper foresight in any work or game will bring success. One has to perform his work or game with a constant determination and without losing hope.
